Buried bunker lies are one of the most challenging shots that golfers face on the golf course. Too often players make this shot more difficult than it is primarily because of their lack of knowledge. Players will usually say a few choice words when they see the lie they have encountered in the bunker and will get in the bunker, close the face, and take a huge lash at the ball either sending the ball over the green or leaving the ball in the bunker. This shot is not as difficult as it seems and I am going to share information with you that most pros do not teach.
The key to a buried bunker shot is to open the clubface not to close it. That’s right, open the clubface at address. Most players are taught to close the clubface at address so that the club will dig the ball out of the sand. In all my years of teaching I have yet to have a Tour Player tell me that is how they play the buried lie. The key to playing a buried lie is to alter a few subtle changes at address and then set the club early on the backswing and stick the club into the sand. First lets discuss the address position. From a normal wide feet position in a bunker move the ball a little back in your stance. Second, place about 60% of your weight on your forward foot. From there you are ready to hit nice, high, soft bunker shots. All you must focus on is to have a very quick early wrist hinge and then strike down into the sand a couple of inches behind the ball and leave the club in the sand. This is the Set and Stick method for buried lies. This will produce a shot that will fly higher and much softer than the closed face, hard lashing swing that I mentioned earlier.
The advanced Set and Stick method is similar to the original except one distinct difference…the finish. The original method required the player to leave the club in the sand. To create an even softer shot coming out of the bunker you must stick the club into the sand and then immediately snatch the club back out of the sand the way it entered. Your finish position will be the same as halfway back in your backswing. Again to reemphasize this point you literally will stick the club in and snatch the club back with literally zero follow through. There needs to be a bit of arm strength for the player to accomplish this advanced method, but I guarantee you this is a shot that will come out of the bunker extremely high and soft.
Buried lies are no longer an area of the game to be feared. With a little knowledge and practice with the Set and Stick method, your buried lies will no longer be a challenge for you.

CJ, when I open the club face do I now have to aim my toe line Left (right handed)? Also should the face be slightly open for all bunker shots or only for burried lie’s?

For years in the off season I practiced a lot in my home made basement driving range with dimpled plastic balls (not whiffle balls) hit into an old bedspread hanging from the ceiling. What’s a lot? No less than 5 hours a week from November to the end of March. My season runs from April through October.
Mostly I used a 5 iron but did hit fairway woods too. I got damn good in the basement but yeat after year when the season came around it was the same old story of poor contact and pathetic distance on the course. and an ever growing handicap.
You can’t begin to imagine the frustration of a good athlete in school, a good hitter in baseball, someone who cut his golfing teeth on the Black Course at Bethpage
where once I shot a 31 on the back nine. At that stage of my golf development my driver would fly about 215-220 yards, my 5 iron was good for 180 yards as measured by Golfotron. My handicap was 8
This year I came to the conclusion something had to be wrong with my fundamentals. I thought long and hard about it.
I didn’t go down into the basement until January. I kept going over in my mind the difference between my feeble golf this past year and my pre-golf strong baseball hitting. I came to the conclusion that i coujldn’t get out of my own way during the golf swing.
Wih that thought in mind I went down to the basement, got a 5 iron, addressed an imaginary ball and, trying to feel a baseball swiing, took a backswing and then stepped into the ball as if I were going to hit a pitch, with the club still in the backswing position like a bat.. What this did for me was to spread my feet a lot wider than my regular address position and I felt a pronouced weight shift to the rear leg as I stepped forward. Now I put a ball down, addressed it, repeated the bckswing and step forward, addressed the ball with the new foot spread and then executed a golf swing. .
The result was astonishing. Instead of a no swish, feeble tap I had been living with I could hear the club flying throught the air and even though it was a plastic ball the contact was crisp, so solid it almost sounded like a gun shot This went on for about an hour. Incidentally, the ball cracked on the fourth shot..
I know, I still have to take it to the course but I am absolutely convinced I’m on to something that’s going to shave strokes off my handicap this year.

March 8th, 2010 at 12:35 amGreat Question. Yes you want to aim your body to the left and this applies to all normal greenside bunker shots. There may only be a few instances (distance related) that you wouldn’t open the clubface. Let me know how your bunker game is coming.
