How many guys have walked into your house and your wife has changed something and we haven’t even noticed. This usually results in us apologizing and saying I’m stupid and sorry. Hopefully it was just a picture and not her hair or something important. Lets face it, we all have. The reason for this is we become complacent and avoid the details in a lot of areas of our life. This same problem happens on the golf course as well, and I see this problem a lot in putting.
Too often we form a ritual with putting and get complacent with our aim and take it for granted that we are aimed correctly. I am here to tell you that most people aim incorrectly with putting. What I am suggesting here is to change putters to a completely different style than you are currently using. I usually recommend to my students that they have at least two putters that they switch between so that they do not become complacent with their aim. I suggest something like an anser style putter and something completely different like a mallet style. These two completely different putters will force you to concentrate on setting up squarely to the ball and will help with the complacency of looking at the same putter over and over again. A mallet putter is good because it is larger in size and I recommend using a putter with a line down the middle of it. This seems to help people line up correctly to putts and will cure the alignment problems they are facing.
Switching putters is a good habit to create. I am not saying that I want you switching day-to-day or week-to-week but probably at least every 3-4 months just for a different look. Guys, feel free to show this article to your wives and use this as a prescription from a swing doctor that to cure your blues and make you happy I recommend buying a new putter. In fact buy two and call me in the morning.

CJ

You talk about aiming your putter and about changing your putter. You recommend a putter with a line down the middle of it. What’s your opinion about a Seemore putter.

Instead of changing putters I change my grip. I am right handed but putt with my left hand down. If my putting goes sour I go back to putting a few balls with the normal grip (right hand down) then return to my ‘usual’ grip again. has worked well for me – and I dont have to worry about having more than 14 clubs in my bag!!!! (which is what would happen if I had two putters).

Try looking at the hole when your putting. Your eyes will tell how hard to stroke the ball, giving you correct distance.

What is your opinion of belly putters? Are they better for certain body types more than others or just simply preference?

Tony,
February 28th, 2010 at 9:27 pmI really have no opinion either way on belly putters. If it works then so be it. Belly Putters have revitalized many a tour players career and I think its great for them. In regards to body types, I don’t think it matters what your body type is as long as the putter is the correct length for you. Again, using a belly putter is simply preference and I think its great for those that it has helped.

February 28th, 2010 at 9:31 pmIn what I teach my students with putting I truly feel that there should be a line on the putter to help with aim. In regards to a specific model of putter I do not suggest one or another. In putting it truly matters what looks good to you. In regards to the seemore and the red dot as a way to allow the face to open and close I 100% agree with the theory of allowing the face to rotate during the stroke. I think they are ugly putters but I do like them if that makes sense.
