A great way to improve your driver is to practice swinging with just your right hand only. Many people struggle with the driver because their golf swing does not support the club properly and they lose width or come over the top.
I have seen many of my students improve just by practice swinging with one hand. This drill forces you to support the club properly at the top with the right elbow and right hand underneath the shaft. This is the position that we want to achieve with both hands on the club, but many do not. Another great reason for practicing with one hand is the width that it creates in your downswing. If you are a player that has the club come down from over the top then the one hand swing will be good because of the extra weight that the club will feel like. In order to swing one handed your body must transition properly or you will stick the club in the ground. The lack of support with two hands will force the body to shift to the left to help the right arm start the club down. You will also notice that as you do this you will maintain width in the right arm and this will allow the face to be square through the impact area longer, causing straighter shots. Once you can do this drill with practice swings I encourage you to hit some balls with an eight iron. Try it slow at first, but as you practice this shot you will notice that you will be able to hit your eight iron over 100 yards in the air. After some success with this drill place both hands on the club but feel like your grip pressure with your left hand is a zero and try to sense the feeling that you had with only one hand.
One handed swings are a great way to improve your driver because it forces the club to fall on plane and it creates the proper feeling of width that you need to hit long straight drives.

The grip is the only connection we have with the club and may be the most important area for you to focus. The problem I have with golf instruction is that it is all-different in regards to the grip and every teacher has his own personal preference with the grip that they want. The problem is that their preference is not what may be right for you. Every person is different and is built slightly different. I cannot tell you how many times I have taught people with flexible wrists, inflexible wrists, double jointed arms, arms that can’t straighten fully, and people with different size chests. All of these factors amongst others effect what the proper grip should be for you. It is physically impossible to put a person into a box and say that this grip is correct for everyone and you should use this grip.
The perfect connection grip was founded upon solid biomechanics and personal body structure to determine what is the best grip for YOU! I do want to give applause for all those instructors that have taught that the left hand should hold the club in the fingers since this is correct. In regards to the grip being strong, weak, neutral, we will discuss that in another article, but for today I want to focus mainly on the right hand. Many instructors leave the grip there and say that you should hold the club in the fingers of both hands and that is DEAD WRONG! The grip is in the left hand fingers and more in the palm for the right hand. The proper way to determine the right hand position is to hold the club at a 45-degree angle in the air and with the right hand make your hand flat and place your right index finger pointed down the shaft. At this point you will feel that your right elbow is low. Now simply slide your right hand down until the lifeline of your right hand sits slightly on the side of your left thumb. Take your normal grip, whether that is the interlock, the overlap, or the 10-finger baseball grip. This will produce a grip that will feel a lot more together than before and puts the wrists in the position to set the club properly so as to maximize the clubhead speed and give you the best control of the club.
The grip is so important to swinging the club properly and everyone’s body is so completely different that I encourage you to determine what is the best grip for YOU. Our previous article focused on the left hand grip and it showed you how to place your left hand on the club so that your joints fall into their natural alignment. You can read it here.
This is the key to the perfect connection golf swing and that is a swing that is easy on the body and tailor made for your body. Any other instruction that does not take into account your shape, body structure, its weaknesses, and strengths will never allow you to achieve the results that you want.

Without a doubt the hardest shot in golf in my opinion is the fairway bunker shot that is 30-50 yards away from the green. Our goal at this point is to understand that we have made an error in course management. Do not try to hit the “miracle” golf shot and compound our problems. This is a very difficult shot and we need to be conservative in our choices and choose a shot that we can hit on the green and hope for the best. There are two different methods on which to hit these fairway bunker shots.
Explosion
We have all hit bunker shots before usually using our Lob Wedge or our Sand Wedge and the setup for this shot is the same. First, start with a very wide stance. Aim your clubface about 30 degrees to the right of the flag and aim your body about 30 degrees to the left of the flag. From here draw a line in the middle of your stance and place the ball about two to three inches forward of that line. The line is where you are trying to hit during the shot. At this point you are ready to hit the shot. Swing back making at least a smooth three quarter backswing and continue through focusing only on a smooth tempo. From here you need to practice on what club you will be using. Practice with a wedge, nine, or eight iron and see how far the ball will go. This method is one that many tour players use from this difficult distance. This is a shot that I have used but it’s not one that I choose to use very often, only because a thin shot from this method will produce disastrous results. The next method for fairway bunkers is one that I have learned from my west Texas days.
Knockdown Bunker
Having played a lot of golf in El Paso, I spent plenty of time hitting shots from the desert. This is a shot I learned to hit from the desert or hard pan lies, and have adopted this shot to be used in fairway bunkers. First, set up like your going to hit a knockdown shot with stance narrow, weight left, and hands forward off your left thigh. From here the shot is a little different. Choke down a little on your sandwedge and try to catch only the ball. This will produce a thin or slightly bladed shot. Because you are thinning this shot you will have to hit it less than 30-50 yards, but the ball will go the proper distance. The ball will come out low and hop once and stop. Practice this shot and you should pick it up pretty easy. I use this shot most often because I am playing for the thin or bad shot. If I hit it a little heavy it won’t travel as far and will usually leave me near the front of the green. Remember we are hitting this bunker shot because of a mistake in course management. Do not make a mental mistake and try to hit the perfect shot. Take your medicine and take the big number out of play.
Improving every part of your golf swing starts with your grip. It gives you the power and control.
There’s no REAL secret to this!
There’s no better feeling then stepping off the course after a nearly perfect game of golf. Every shot seemed to sail into the green like a guided missile.
Like most golfers perfect days like this don’t happen often. At least not frequent enough to call yourself a great golfer. That’s about to change.
Every small detail with your grip, stance, and swing has everything to do with the power and accuracy. One small mistake affects your game…and it all begins with your grip.
Holding your club the wrong way restricts your motion….your power is limited because you can’t follow through completely. It’s a downward spiral of mistakes that’s stealing yards off your drive.
Maximum club head speed begins with gripping the club that feeds the power from your right leg to the bottom of the club. You don’t have to be strong to hit the ball 300 yards.
Stop thinking about what you need to do… and just do it.
Golf is natural…once you realize this you gain the strength, power and accuracy that gives you that GREAT day on the course every time. You become that guy everyone wants on their tournament team. You earn the respect on the course – every golfer wants this.
Real quick, I need you to do something. Stand up for a minute. Now look down at the position of your hands. Their dropped down beside you with your palms facing to the back. It’s natural…you’re not fighting to keep them this way… they just are. With the golf club in your hand the right way it feels just like this – Natural…not forced.
You’ll gain yards, lower your score and dramatically improve your game.
Improving your grip you’ll feel relaxed… your swing will improve… along with your strength and power. Women and kids can have just as much power using this technique as a 250lb muscle man has.
Turning your golf game into a consistently powerful and accurate machine every time is simple. Unless… you’re making common rookie mistakes.
Most golfers quit on their golf shot. Extending through the shot with speed and accuracy gives you a straight powerful shot…again…. and again.
Common mistakes become bad habits. These habits are your biggest problem.
The good news is habits can be broken. Most habits take months to break. With the Power Secrets System you’ll start launching long-distance, pin-point accurate drives in no time at all. It’s incredible easy… once you know what to do.
Listen, even if your backswing and downswing are perfect, without the correct impact position it means nothing. Power, distance and accuracy needs to be put into your golf game. Without them your game is unpredictable.
Nearly everything about golf is natural – grip, stance, and even your swing. Following through with acceleration in your swing goes against human nature. Logical thinking says stop. Thinking about turning the club interferes with both power and accuracy.
Commitment drives the ball towards the target!
This is as much of a mental thing as it is a physical. Confidence breeds success. Dig deep inside yourself and find confidence in your swing. Suddenly your score drops dramatically. It’s that simple.
Golf is an easy game!
It’s easy… when you let the natural mechanics of your body do its job… block out the bad advice of teachers telling you “stay still”, “keep your eye on the ball” and “grip the club tight”.
Going against everything that you’ve been told seems ridiculous.
You’ve read these in every golf magazine, heard them from every club pro and all the experts again and again. You never see Pro golfers anchoring their head…or keeping their eye on the ball. It’s because it doesn’t help your game.
There’s no magical source of power and control. Tapping into the power and control that exists inside you adds yards every time.
